School Songs
Any minor public school worth its salt will have its own song. Many of these songs were designed to be rousing and patriotic, but others proclaim joy in the supposed antiquity of their schools. Perhaps the most comic song belonged to Stamford School in Lincolnshire. Written by a schoolmaster, AWS Cowie, who later perished in the First World War, it was sung with gusto to the tune of the Vicar of Bray:
In Father Time's remoter days,
By strange coincidences,
Noah built the Ark and someone else
Schola Stamfordiensis
Below is a small selection of school songs, though we are always delighted to hear of the dire warbles of your own schools, crap or otherwise. Just send them to us or let us know about them on the message board. We've included a number of songs from prep schools, grammar schools and others, simply because they were almost certainly inspired by crap public schools. Besides, dreadfulness of this sort ought to be celebrated, wherever it is found.
We've also got a magnificent collection of school song fragments on the message board. Take a look and see if you can help us fill the gaps.
