Hugh Grant (b 1960)
One hallmark of a public school background is a string of laughable middle names. One person who fits this definition beautifully is Hugh John Mungo Grant, the actor and alumnus of Latymer Upper School.
Grant has long been preoccupied by his looks and, at the age of twelve was delighted when he injured his face playing rugby. In his own words: "it came up all swollen... I thought I looked pretty sexy. And so did the girls, apparently. When it went down, I thought 'what the hell can I do now?', so I mutilated myself on the face by cutting myself with my mother's razor... not very cool." Yes, Hugh - not very cool.
Since then Hugh Grant has been in a number of successful films, usually playing a floppy haired, dozy fop. Sometimes he varies this by playing a floppy-haired, dozy cad. In either role he is adored by Americans and loathed by hundreds of public school alumni who find themselves asking "I'm not really like that am I?"
Most of them aren't. For one thing they never shagged Elizabeth Hurley. Perhaps rather more have been arrested in the company of a prostitute as Grant was in Hollywood in 1995.
Again - not a very cool thing to do.
